About the Laundress and context for the role

The Laundress is a recently acquired (2019) company that manufactures and sells premium laundry and home care products in the US and abroad. The brand is known for delivering extraordinary textile care with amazing fragrance experiences. In the US, our products are sold via a D2C, Amazon, specialty wholesale retailers (both eCommerce and brick and mortar) and a retail store. The brand remains largely non-integrated into Unilever systems and processes, yielding the feel and agility of start-up with ‘big company’ support available when we need capability beyond our organization.


Our business trajectory is very strong; however, the organization has seen a lot of change recently (including a re-org in July 2021) and we have not had consistent, strategic HR support. The team needs strong, strategic and caring HR support from the HR Manager role.

Background & Purpose of the Job

The HR Manager supports business stakeholders, and line managers with The Laundress employee relations matters, performance management, and guidance on HR processes. The role’s objective is to provide consistent support with HR processes and enable smooth running of HR operations, and simultaneously build The Laundress employee experience. The role requires a customer mindset and strong bias for action. 

These activities will include, but are not limited to, Building Relationships with Business Stakeholders, Performance Management, Employment Law/Legal Compliance, Employee Advocacy, Data & Analytics, and Ad-hoc People Projects.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead end of HR activities and agenda including payroll/HR operations, employee relations, employee engagement, recruitment, leadership coaching and development

  • Manage day-to-day employee relations issues, including escalation to Employee Relations partners

  • Provide guidance, lead and support Line Managers on performance management process

  • Maintain effective employee relations through implementation, investigation and case management of employee relations concerns

  • Responsible to develop and maintain knowledge of all key HR tools, systems and processes

  • Provide reporting and analytics based on organization needs and driving insights for leads using existing data

  • Foster leadership success as a proactive thought partner, anticipating the business cycles and serving as a consultant during periods of change management

  • Serve as an agile and flexible resource on managing HR related issues while serving as a change agent.

  • Coach and consult on organizational design and management issues, as well as challenging and/or influencing decision-making processes

  • Lead change management efforts around growth culture and process evolution

  • Manage relationship with greater Unilever HR to ensure the Laundress is aware of policies, tools, training, and in general, benefitting from the deep expertise outside of our organization.

What Skills Are Needed to Succeed

  • 5+ year’s HR experience

  • BA/BS Required

  • General knowledge of payroll and HR systems and operations

  • Ability to provide both verbal and written information clearly, succinctly, and persuasively as well as ability to influence others

  • Strong organizational skills are important as well as attention to details and an ability to multi-task and see work through to conclusions (project management experience a plus)

  • General knowledge of employment laws and practices

  • Proven track record of successfully working in a growing, dynamic organization

  • Ability to work independently, taking ownership to positively influence end to end results despite differing goals and priorities

  • Action-oriented to initiate appropriate resources and tools to ensure delivery on key HR processes

  • Strong stakeholder management with ability to impact and influence different areas of the organization

  • Continuous improvement / simplification mindset and experience
