The Global R&D Design team is seeking a product development & scientific leader who can bring their innovative & entrepreneurial spirit to the Skin Cleansing team in order to accelerate the future technologies of sustainable superior care for new beauty & wellness innovations that delight the consumer. 

Background & Purpose of the Job  

This position is with the Global Dove/Men+Care & Advanced Liquids R&D Design team based in Trumbull, CT - working with leading edge-technology and in a truly purpose-driven culture.  The Principal Scientist/Manager will be responsible for the strategic product development of Advanced Liquids technologies and accelerating the development into future category offerings for our global Cleansing Brands including Dove, Dove Men+Care and more.  The Principal Scientist/Manager will report to the Global Dove/DM+C & Advanced Liquids R&D Director and will work in partnership with global cross-functional teams and assigned team members, including direct reports, to expand the impact of Unilever’s cleansing program and brands. The candidate will be a recognized technical project leader with experience in developing market-leading superior products based on new technology. The candidate will lead the team responsible for the development and integration of advanced liquids technologies to accelerate the future of superior care, novel benefits and irresistible sensorial experiences.  

As a leader in future fit technologies and innovative formats, the candidate will have a proven record of ability to identify future opportunities based on the knowledge of evolving external science as well as developing & delivering on technical product development briefs. The candidate will have expertise in end-to-end product development & project management in order to deliver winning products that delight the consumer. It will be critical that the individual possess a deep expertise in surfactant science, especially in relation to clinical mildness & moisturization efficacy, as well an ability to correlate key product performance metrics into the language of the consumer experience. The Principal Scientist/Manager will have a global Skin Cleansing Category Design role, working with technological applications across multiple brands and geographies; the candidate must possess a keen internal/external view into the horizon of future technologies as well as how they can be integrated across various branded propositions for the consumers we serve.  The candidate will lead the program in driving sustainability into the future of all Unilever Skin Cleansing R&D innovations, generating the category technology & partnerships that will drive the delivery of meaningful products, insights and clinicals in collaboration with scientific and technology experts to ensure delivery of the best in Superior Care for people & the planet.

The candidate will be responsible for a broad array of work/technology programs that pull together multi-functional resources in support of project delivery.

This will involve working with internal R&D teams, Marketing, CTI/Claims, Procurement, Supply Chain, external suppliers, and local team counterparts. The position requires strong communication and team skills as well as the ability to influence and drive technical work towards key decision points with internal/external stakeholders. The candidate will have a scientific pioneer mindset that is able to bring deep technical expertise to life, specifically in the area of surfactant science, cosmetic and sustainability technologies; the candidate will lead internal/external technical partnerships for Unilever to accelerate these technologies into market with speed in order to accelerate beauty & wellness technologies/benefits for People & Planet. The role requires a lean innovation mindset to lead the program development of consumer product testing for new products, bringing agile methods and new ways of thinking to develop and execute minimum viable products (MVP). The Principal Scientist/Manager will partner with R&D, clinical and claims experts to lead the development of new clinical methods, product/ingredient performance measurements and evidence-based research to deliver meaningful beauty, health & wellness outcomes for superior care.

You’re a story teller: Have the ability to transform product attributes into meaningful visualizations and demos that make our technologies stand out vs. competitors. Also you need to be able to communicate our technologies to a wide range of audiences with varying technical backgrounds.

What You’ll Need To Succeed

  • MS or BS/BEng in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry, or relevant cosmetic sciences with 7+ years of experience in cosmetic product formulation, surfactant science and new product development. 

  • Project Management experience with ability to lead/influence peers in order to affect change

  • Demonstrable R&D leadership in crafting novel products superior to market offerings across innovative formats.

  • Extensive experience working within an FMCG environment & supplier collaboration

  • Experience formulating new products, chemistry, and competitive innovation driving new business opportunities and knowledge of formula scale-up & manufacturing equipment.

  • People management - lead a technical team of both in-direct and direct reports
