We are the Global Health & Wellbeing (H&W) team at Unilever. We are a start-up (less than 2 years old), focused on one of Unilever’s largest growth opportunities – the €140bn Health & Wellbeing space defined by Vitamins, Minerals, and Supplements (VMS).

Who You Are and What You'll Do
The R&D Packaging Engineer, Health & Wellbeing will be responsible for developing the best-in-class packaging capabilities to support the growth ambition for the Health & Wellbeing Collective – specifically in relation to new product development and new market entry and the establishment of an external ecosystem of technical partners/capabilities. The role will have cross functional interactions and coordination across Marketing, Supply chain, Product Development, SEAC, Quality, Regulatory and external Contract labs & Material suppliers to ensure timely delivery of the objectives.
The role will be required to provide expertise related to packaging development and would cover a broad range of challenges. Developing packaging that delights consumers, while delivers functional requirements, furthers sustainability goals. Ensuring successful scaling up/production by leveraging external Contract labs and Collaborative manufacturers. This position will also serve as an R&D representative on cross-functional.
Assist the Packaging Manager with the co-ordination of packaging development projects, and can lead assigned projects as packaging work stream leader
Manage assigned primary and secondary packaging projects, with minimal guidance, working with Brand Development and the cross-functional project team, ensuring packaging is fit for purpose to meet the packaging brief, and delivered on time, in full
Partners with Supply chain to assist in technical assessments of contract manufacturing sites
Identify and work collaboratively with network of internal & external experts, component supplier/convertors, design agencies, testing labs, & contract manufacturers to develop activities related to Packaging Design & development.
Deliver packaging which not only meets the required quality and technical standards, but also delights the consumer and builds brand love, through using Unilever’s Packaging Excellence best practices
Technical analysis of new packaging designs and provision of feedback to project teams with respect to design viability; also identify possible solutions to resolve technical problems, minimizing changes to the design intent
Manage good technical data records – project data, specifications, test results
Proactive identification of technical risks and recommendations to mitigate risks, to be brought to management
Manage and deliver their own agreed work plan Evaluation and qualification of packaging components for their project portfolio using both established protocols, and where appropriate designing new ones Identify and implement potential cost saving activities across the category packaging portfolio
Attendance of project meetings and deputise for manager when required
Prepare and develop supplier technical briefs where required, working closely with suppliers To develop and test packaging in accordance with the Unilever’s Packaging Excellence best practices.
What You'll Need to Succeed
Science or Engineering Degree with Packaging Degree with 5 yrs of relevant experience.
Working knowledge of Flexibles, laminates & Paper/paperboard packaging in a Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) company, ideally with some packaging experience in Dietary supplement/OTC products.
Good understanding of Packaging components, sustainable packaging solutions for consumer-friendly formats
Is able to execute tasks independently.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to work well with others, and ability to plan and execute work independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to support projects with multiple external parties including contractors, research partners, manufacturing facilities, etc.
Pay: The pay range for this position is $83,200 to $124,700. Unilever takes into consideration a wide range of factors that are utilized in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, qualifications and education, and other business and organizational needs.
Bonus: This position is bonus eligible.
Long-Term Incentive (LTI): This position is LTI eligible.
