Job Title: Claims Specialist
Location: Port Sunlight, UK
Fabric Care is one of the biggest categories in Unilever and the largest category in Home Care. Consisting of Fabric Cleaning (brands such as Dirt 4 Good and Surf) and Fabric Enhancers (brands such as Comfort and Snuggle).
This position offers a unique opportunity within the Global Fabric Enhancers R&D Design team at Port Sunlight, UK, where you'll work with cutting-edge technology and be part of the fast-paced category, driving transformative growth on a global scale. The Fabric Enhancers R&D team is at the forefront of developing highly desirable product innovations. Understanding and meeting the needs of our consumers is at the heart of Fabric Enhancers product development. As part of the formulation team, you will work in a multi-disciplinary business environment ensuring the development of new technologies and formulations to support our Global Innovation Portfolio. This predominately laboratory-based role will play an important part in delivering new innovations and technologies to the fabric conditioner & liquid booster project pipeline.
In Homecare R&D we adopt a digital first approach in designing and executing performance tests therefore we also expect the data capture as an outcome of all laboratory experiments using tools like LIMS, ELN & SDC.
MAIN JOB PURPOSE
Work independently and lead a programme to:
- Deliver claims ambition for key brands within the Fabric Enhancer Category
- Develop, substantiate, and defend through challenge, big impactful consumer relevant product claims, interacting in a multi-disciplinary business environment providing a critical link between the BG/BU, Legal, Regs and Marketing.
- Delivery of outstanding claims and communications for our innovations that are robustly supported in technical and consumer understanding.
- Lead and execute the creation of Knowledge Based Selling, utilising physical technical demos as well as digital assays.
Mainly lab-based job, requiring 4-5 days working on site in Port Sunlight.
MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Define and deliver claims strategy and work plan for relevant projects in Fabric Enhancers.
- Support relevant strategic activities to “raise the game” in the claim generation process
- Employ a sound understanding of the category, brands, competitive environment, consumer and technology to develop robust, and where necessary novel, approaches (incl robust consumer insights) to generate, develop and support ambitious product claims/communication. Execute activities that drive technical product understanding and technical consumer insights into creative consumer communications for concept creation, label copy, advertising, public relations.
- Drive SASSY framework within Claims and KBS.
- Deliver robust claims support dossier and final recommendation to relevant Teams (approval of all package label copy, advertising briefs and final commercials, public relations materials, and sales materials).
- Translate claims into demonstrations that are consumer relevant and drive innovation understanding with consumers, sales, legal, pr/advertising agencies, and external category influencers (magazine editors, etc)
KEY SKILLS
- Good organisation and time-management
- Good communication written and oral to convey information effectively and to influence outcomes
- Interact effectively within project team or natural working group to achieve common objectives and goals
- Ability to use digital tools like MS Excel, Power Point, LIMS, ELN & SDC and report the outcome of an experiment in a clear concise way
- Experimental design, familiarity with statistical tools, statistical data analysis and statistical interpretation of data
- Problem solving skills with practical creativity, understand situations or needs and recommend or carry out actions which are relevant and appropriate
- Ability to work with in multi-functional teams both internal and external
- Attention to detail and accuracy in assessment and reporting is critical
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
- BSc or MSc (or equivalent) in Physical Sciences or Engineering (including Physics, Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemistry or Biochemistry).
- Strong experience in product claims generation within homecare, Beauty and wellbeing, personal care or wider FMCG.
- Strong interface management skills.
- Interpersonal and communication skills.
- Time Management.
- Analytical capability for results interpretation.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
Consumer research experience and/or Product Development experience.
Technical product evaluation (appraisal, clinical, instrumental expertise).
Project Management experience.

Recruitment Fraud
Cyber criminals advertise fake job adverts with prestigious employers as a way of stealing information or even defrauding individuals out of money. In the most sophisticated cases, they will set up fake websites, which have a similar address to companies like Unilever. They even conduct fake telephone interviews and then offer candidates a role with the proviso they pay a fee for background checks or to cover work visa costs. These types of attacks are becoming more common as more people are looking for employment in the economic climate.
How is Unilever tackling this?
Many of Unilever’s recruitment sites publish a warning to candidates about recruitment fraud. The Cyber Security team also proactively scan for signs of people setting up fake Unilever sites and act to close them down.
