Safety Engineer

Job Purpose
The Site SHE Engineer (SHE Supervisor) is responsible for driving safe behaviors, proactive hazard identification, and Speak Up culture at the Raeford Factory. This role provides day‑to‑day SHE leadership on the floor, partners closely with operations and maintenance, and ensures risks are identified, escalated, and controlled before incidents occur.
The role is critical in embedding Zero Harm to People, Community, and Planet by translating SHE standards into practical, visible actions that employees trust and follow.
Key Responsibilities
1. Speak Up Culture & Employee Engagement
Actively promote and model a Speak Up, no‑blame culture across all shifts and functions.
Encourage early reporting of hazards, near misses, unsafe conditions, and behavioral risks.
Ensure all Speak Up concerns are acknowledged, investigated, and closed with feedback.
Support Speak Up ambassadors / peer safety champions (where applicable).
Partner with leaders to ensure learning‑focused conversations, not blame‑based responses.
2. Hazard Identification & Risk Management
Lead and coach teams on effective hazard identification and risk perception, especially for:
High‑risk activities (LOTO, work at height, confined space, contractors, energized work)
Maintenance, projects, and non‑routine tasks
Facilitate Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), permits to work, and task risk assessments.
Support behavioral safety programs (e.g., SafeStart) and translate observations into action.
Identify repeat risks and escalate systemic issues to site leadership.
3. Incident Prevention, Investigation & Learning
Support incident and near‑miss investigations with a learning‑before‑blame mindset.
Ensure corrective actions are practical, sustainable, and verified for effectiveness.
Track trends and share lessons learned across departments and shifts.
Participate in reenactments, safety moments, and leadership learning sessions as needed.
4. SHE Compliance & Standards
Support compliance with company SHE standards, legal requirements, and audit expectations.
Assist with preparation, execution, and closure of:
Internal audits
LD2 / external audits
Leadership safety walks and site visits
Ensure SHE procedures are understood, applied, and continuously improved on the floor.
5. Leadership Support & Visibility
Be a visible SHE presence in the factory — regularly on the floor, not behind a desk.
Participate in tier meetings, shift handovers, and CSHEC as required.
Coach frontline leaders on:
Safe leadership behaviors
Effective Speak Up responses
Risk‑based decision making
Challenge unsafe behaviors and conditions respectfully and confidently, regardless of role or level.
6. Data, Metrics & Continuous Improvement
Track leading indicators (hazards, Speak Ups, observations, near misses).
Support CSHEC reporting with meaningful trends and stories, not just numbers.
Use data to prioritize actions and improve prevention effectiveness.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aligned with factory and NA SHE strategy.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or related field
(or equivalent experience)
3–5+ years of experience in manufacturing or industrial SHE roles
Strong working knowledge of:
Hazard identification and risk assessment
Incident investigation
Contractor safety
Permit‑to‑work systems
Demonstrated ability to influence without authority and engage frontline teams
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting behavior‑based safety or SafeStart‑type programs
Experience in food, personal care, or high‑risk manufacturing environments
Professional certification (or working toward):
CSP, ASP, CHST, or equivalent
Experience supporting audits (internal or external)
Key Skills & Behaviors
Strong communicator with the ability to build trust at all levels
Comfortable challenging unsafe acts and conditions respectfully
Practical, solution‑oriented mindset
Visible, approachable, and credible on the factory floor
Passion for prevention, learning, and people‑focused safety
What Success Looks Like in This Role
Employees feel safe and confident to Speak Up
Hazards are identified and addressed before incidents
Leaders respond consistently with care, trust, and learning
SHE is seen as a partner, not a policing function
Raeford continues progressing toward Zero Harm
