A Culture of Care

That is why wellbeing and learning are two cornerstones of our benefits offering, as we are committed to help you continuously develop and learn, and find and bring your purpose to life.

Wellbeing

Wellbeing is very important to us. We empower and develop our employees to be the best version of themselves, and to help them contribute to the world, through their career.

We understand that the meaning of wellbeing is multidimensional and only achieved with a balance of different elements. This is why we have combined these elements in our wellbeing framework, summarizing all aspects of wellbeing we look at and help develop:

Purposeful wellbeing

Identifying what really matters to us and connecting to that as much as possible in all we do

Physical wellbeing

Looking after our health, fitness, diet, sleep and energy levels so we can approach the challenges ahead with enthusiasm and open-mindedness

Mental wellbeing

Managing our mental choices and reactions to distractions, pressures, challenges and adversity

Emotional wellbeing

Finding ways to feel positive and to confidently face the challenges life throws at us

Our Wellbeing framework

To create a workplace that supports our wellbeing framework, our approach focuses on a number of factors:

Culture

We are committed to building a healthy and diverse, equal and inclusive culture, where everyone can bring their whole self to work. We focus on empowering our people through education, raising awareness and addressing stigma linked to mental health.

Support

We offer a range of support services to all employees and their family members. The Unilever Global Employee Assistance Programme provides access to counselling services, mindfulness-based stress reduction courses, life coaching, financial wellbeing, and resilience training. We also have an internal Global Health Champions Network, which enables our employees to have peer-to-peer mental health conversations when they need it.

Leadership

We are raising awareness and equipping our leaders to lead for wellbeing and performance, encouraging them to become role models for their teams. We provide tools and evidence-based assessments to improve wellbeing, connection, team support and psychological safety.

Prevention

We provide access to learning and resources that sustain and develop energy and resilience, including access to company-wide mindfulness sessions.

Learning

As a purpose-led, future-fit company, we empower people to build careers anchored by purpose. We do so by offering a unique approach to development for all, encouraging employees to consider personal aspects of leadership and wellbeing to select the skills they wish to improve upon.

We understand that careers are becoming more fluid and that career development will take different forms in the future. For us, this is an incentive to offer our employees the opportunity to develop their careers based on their skillset instead of following a beaten path, and why we have committed to upskilling all our employees by 2025.

In order to make that happen, we encourage life-long learning and support all of our employees, regardless of their role or location, to improve their current skills or developing the skills required for other roles across Unilever. We do this through:

Helping everyone to develop their own Future Fit Plan, anchored in their Purpose, which helps everyone to identify which skills they want and need to develop for their future

Skill and leadership development interventions designed by dedicated Learning Leads in partnership with business leaders

The opportunity to help all employees

To find the learning they need in an online learning platform with over 100,000 pieces of content, available 24/7 and in 20 languages, developed by Unilever, leading business schools and diverse external partners

On-the-job learning

The possibility to develop new skills and experiences by doing a different role or project, fulltime or parttime next to your current role, enabled by Flex: our own internal talent AI driven marketplace tool, that helps matching talent to the right opportunity

Instructor-led training for groups offered in local languages, as well as access to external certifications, funded by Unilever

Mentoring

Mentoring from cross-functional leaders across the business

Finally, the way we approach development is inclusive: as we are becoming a more networked organisation, we are moving away from hierarchies and want to drive development on every level – as opposed to focusing on just a select few – using the following approach:

  • Equipping all individuals with tools and techniques to enable high performance, such as retreats that use mindfulness and reflection to build impact and resilience.
  • We offer development, support tools and training for all our teams, to be the most effective they can be. We have developed a team energy tool that helps every team to develop their ways of working together to have maximum impact.
  • Making Leadership Development available on an ongoing basis through online resources given to all leaders as they move through roles: from becoming a line manager for the first time, to becoming a senior strategic leader running a business unit or function.
