Introduction
Unilever’s Global Competition Team is responsible for identifying and managing competition law risks and opportunities, providing advice that supports and drives the achievement of Unilever’s strategic objectives, and business partnering the global sales (Customer Development – CD) team. We are a dynamic small team of four senior lawyers and one paralegal/assistant. Our ambition and purpose is to pioneer cutting-edge competition legal work and CD business partnering to help steer Unilever ahead of the curve as the purpose-driven leader in fast-moving consumer goods markets worldwide.
We now have an exciting opening for a leading role in the team with a broad range of responsibilities.
The position is historically based in Brussels but other locations – London, Rotterdam or Barcelona – are also possible, also depending on personal preferences of the candidate.
WHAT WILL YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES BE?
Advising Unilever-internal business partners across Business Groups and functions in competition law-related matters.
Across all of Unilever’s Business Groups and functions, updating and delivering global policies, guidelines and training on competition law.
Continuously optimising the competition law skills of other internal lawyers and or global (antitrust) compliance champions.
Lead all competition-related aspects of the global strategic business partnering for CD to enable growth while complying with applicable (especially competition) laws and regulations.
Business partner CD in all competition-related developments of global and European CD strategies – notably on Unilever’s route-to-market, pricing and trade terms, cooperation agreements, growth enablers such as category management.
Work with the European business unit legal teams in drafting, review, and negotiation of international / multi-countries CD contracts and agreements.
Develop and initiate/support the implementation of policies and procedures to ensure (competition) compliance in CD projects and sales operations.
THE QUALITIES WE LOOK FOR
Excellent legal skills are indispensable especially in relation to the rules on horizontal agreements, vertical restrictions and abuse of dominance. A EU legal background/practical experience is helpful given the particular relevance of European markets and jurisdictions for this role.
Candidates should have minimum 10-year competition law experience from working in international law firms, multinational companies and/or leading competitor enforcers. A strong expertise in behavioral antitrust (as opposed to merger control which is of less importance to this role) is key.
Substantial experience in strategically advising and supporting sales teams of multinational company is an important additional qualification.
Outstanding communication skills are a key requirement to succeed in this role.
Strong business acumen is essential to acquire a deep understanding of Unilever’s business and especially our route-to-market models.
Capacity to reduce complexity in easily comprehensible, impeccable English is a critical requirement for this position.
A collaborative mindset and excellent project management skills are important for the successful implementation of complex legal solutions in a dynamic global business environment.
A bias for action and a creative, solution-orientated approach.
Ability to handle multiple assignments and manage major projects to successful completion.
Self-motivation and ability to work independently.
