Reporting To: Engineering Manager
Department: Engineering Department - Digital Transformation

ROLE SUMMARY -
We are seeking a technically proficient Digital Engineer to architect, implement, and optimize industrial digital solutions across a multi-site manufacturing cluster. The role involves deep integration of Operational Technology (OT) systems, secure data acquisition and transmission to cloud platforms, and advanced analytics to drive OEE, energy efficiency, process capability improvements, etc. through digital adoption. The engineer will be instrumental in enabling data-driven decision-making and digital adoption across factories producing Homecare, Personal Care, and Beauty & Wellbeing products.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES -
1. OT Infrastructure & Systems Integration
• Design and configure Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems for real-time process control and monitoring.
• Interface with field instrumentation (flow meters, pressure sensors, temperature transmitters, load cells, etc.) using industrial protocols such as Modbus, Profibus, EtherNet/IP, and HART.
• Develop and maintain industrial network architecture, including Layer 2/3 segmentation, VLANs, firewalls, and DMZ zones for secure OT-IT convergence.
• Implement data acquisition pipelines using OPC UA/DA standards to stream telemetry and control data to Azure IoT Hub or Azure OPC Twin.

2. Cybersecurity in OT Environments
• Deploy and manage CrowdStrike Falcon or equivalent EDR/XDR solutions tailored for OT assets.
• Conduct threat modeling, vulnerability assessments, network hardening, business continuity plan to ensure secured operation, compliance & frameworks.
• Collaborate with IT-OT security teams to enforce zero-trust architecture and role-based access control (RBAC) in OT networks.

3. Data Engineering & Visualization
• Build and maintain ETL pipelines for structured and unstructured data ingestion from edge devices to cloud platforms.
• Develop interactive dashboards using Power BI, Grafana, or Azure Data Explorer to visualize KPIs such as OEE, energy consumption, dosing accuracy, process capability, live utility monitoring & analyzing, predictive maintenance tools, predictive loss analysis in energy monitoring & batch processing related dashboards etc.
• Implement data validation frameworks to ensure data integrity, schema consistency, and timestamp synchronization across field devices, OPC servers, and dashboards.

4. Advanced Analytics & Benchmarking
• Perform cross-site benchmarking using statistical models and machine learning to compare performance across machines, production lines, factories, and countries.
• Analyze batch process data to improve Cp, Cpk, and Six Sigma metrics in mixers and dosing systems for products like shampoo, lotion, detergent, and creams.
• Digital Twin or Real-time digital model of a machine, production line, or entire factory which mirrors the behavior, performance, and condition of the physical counterpart using live data from sensors, PLCs, SCADA, and other OT systems & enables simulation, prediction, and optimization of operations without interfering with the actual production.
• Dark Cascade—especially in relation to low manpower utilization using digital tools & techniques of Unilever Manufacturing System (UMS) and Lighthouse factories by integrating AI, IoT, machine learning, and automation to improve productivity, energy efficiency, high-capacity utilization, efficient manpower utilization, quality, safety and sustainability.
• Identify and quantify excess weight, scrap, and overconsumption losses using trend analysis, SPC, and root cause diagnostics.

5. Operational Excellence & KPI Management
• Drive improvements in Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) by analyzing downtime events, micro-stoppages, and MTTR/MTBF metrics.
• Optimize specific energy consumption (kWh/ton) and steam usage (ton/ton) through real-time monitoring and predictive analytics.
• Support creation of Real Time Factory Master KPI Dashboards covering Quality, Safety, Productivity, Cost, Compliance, and Sustainability metrics aligned with corporate goals.

Some examples of executional tasks will be -

  • Fully develop software applications to communicate with hardware on the site.
  • Integrate pre-existing software modules together and/or with newly developed components.
  • Preform upgrades on pre-existing software applications.

• Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, or Computer Science.
• 3-5 years of hands-on experience in industrial automation, OT systems, and cloud-based data analytics.
• Proficient in PLC programming (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Schneider) and SCADA platforms (Wonderware, WinCC, Ignition).
• Strong knowledge of OPC UA/DA, MQTT, REST APIs, and Azure IoT architecture.
• Experience with CrowdStrike, network security tools, and industrial cybersecurity standards.
• Skilled in data visualization, SQL, Python, and statistical analysis tools.
• Strong collaboration with regional & local teams like MANEX, Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Safety & IT-OT team to lead digital transformation in field works.
• Familiarity with FMCG manufacturing processes, especially in batch making, liquid dosing systems, energy & utility monitoring, OEE monitoring, predictive loss analytics, predictive maintenance tools etc.

Highlights across skills would essentially be -

  • Demonstrated expertise in reading/writing/debugging software programs in any object-oriented programming languages. (e.g. .NET/C# or Python) is a must.
  • Familiarity with .NET, SQL Databases & HTML is a plus.
  • In depth understanding of computer networks/IP Addressing/General Network hardware.
  • Basic understanding of Electrical wiring/cabling.
