Arabia SHE manager will lead the overall effort to implement Zero Harm strategy into action in Unilever own operations but also maintaining a competitive advantage in a very demanding business environment increasingly characterized by:

•  multifaceted threat landscape including geopolitical tensions and safety threats (Israel – Hamas – Iran hostilities, natural disasters, and health related crises).

•  specific safety and environment regulations & compliance standards, particularly in FMCG industries exposing companies to legal and liability considerations in case of non-compliance in KSA specifically (e.g. legal national safety quotas and Saudization law)

• strong cultural and social nuances environment requiring a solid local knowledge to navigate these factors effectively and nurture solid relationships and increased trust with employees, business partners (JVs) and authorities

•  increased productivity, cost savings and risk reduction strategies to reduce absenteeism, turnover, and disruptions caused by accidents, injuries, or health issues.

•  corporate requirements to fulfill legal duty of care to ensure staff, visitors & contractors well-being.

What will your main responsibilities be:

  • Arabia SHE Manager has overall responsibility for managing Occupational Health, Occupational Safety, Environment agendas and frameworks to achieve Excellence on own Unilever Sites and extended 3P ecosystem in scope, contributing to Unilever Strategy of Vision Zero.

  • S/he works with Category Supply Chain teams, Business Operations teams (Logistics), Workplace Services, HR and Occupational Health, Customer Development (CD) and Communications to develop and lead implementation of SHE strategy and improvement plans to achieve sustainable excellence by reducing occupational injuries and work-related health illnesses expressed in TRFR and environmental impacts such that waste, effluents, emissions, energy consumption, CO2.

  • S/he partners together with Regional Security Manager to assist in implementation of a fit-for-purpose Security Strategy that aims to mitigate risks to Unilever employees, contractors, visitor and 3P partners, and the Company assets, thus proactively implementing layers of protections against losses.

SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment)

Strategy into Action, Business Partnering, Safety Governance and Culture

  • Defines and leads overall implementation of SHE strategy, priorities, and roadmaps for Arabia in line with overarching Global and Regional level strategy and priorities to achieve excellent sustainable results. Identifies risks and effective strategies for mitigation in close collaboration with Categories SC and BO leadership.

  • Provides servant, efficient and long-standing Business Partnering: brings expertise, risk analysis, solutions, trainings and operational support to Arabia Board, Factory Managers, Business groups, and Business Operations. Implements License to Lead and other trainings to Leadership required to operate and lead Safety agendas with confidence.

  • Supports and actively participates in business continuity and crisis management pillar, coordinating IMT (incident management team) activities as a Coordinator. Coordinates delivery of capability trainings and required technical support.

  • Partners with the Regional and Category environmental capability teams (Env and Engineering) to drive initiatives towards env compliance and sustainability. Coordinates delivery of Sustainability Roadmaps to reduce Waste, Water, Energy, CO2 footprints in factories & Logistics.

  • Works together with NA MET & Pakistan SHE and Security Director to secure line leadership commitment to help promote and embed safety into Business Agendas. Personally promotes and leads by examples the culture of Safety Moments, Safety Behavior Observations on the shopfloor.

  • Establishes strong and efficient partnership with NALI & Arabia & Iraq Regional Security Manager in delivering agreed plans and improvements as per SSRA / APR and IMT / Board and SC LT decisions to de-risk business operations.

  • Coordinates regular CSHEC (Central Safety Health and Env) committee meetings with Arabia Board acting as a program Custodian and a Facilitator. Ensures other countries in the region have established the same governance and cadence for CSHEC meetings and comply.

  • Expertly supports Arabia Safe Travel (Road Safety) sub-committee under CSHEC governance. Leads regular follow up reviews to track implementation of agreed actions.

  • Defines and deploys a comprehensive Communication Plan to promote safe behaviors in the organization at all levels based on identified risks and incident trend analysis.

  • Personally leads deployment of UMS (Unilever Manufacturing System) Safety & Environment /Sustainability Pillars in 2 factories in line with Regional rollout plans.

  • Coordinates risk assessment of sites and ensures adequate programs are deployed consistently to mitigate high risk activities related but not limited to Process Safety, Electrical Safety, Working @ Height, Process Safety, Permit to Work tasks, Construction Safety, Road Safety, MMHE. Enables implementation of Industrial Hygiene programs.

  • Implements Safety standards and protocols towards 3P Collaborative Manufactures and Logistics partners, focusing on factories, logistical centers/ warehouses and transport haulers engaged to transport Unilever R&P and F&G.

  • Drives fit for purpose initiatives towards safety cultural transformation across the geography using available Company tools (Be Safe, Habit Safe, etc) and external products.

  • Works together with a country / national Security team to support implementation of minimum mandated requirements of Unilever physical security standard in every site. Ensures allocation of required resourcing from SHE teams to fill the role of Local Security Officer (LSO) by assigning the accountability to one of SHE professionals in each site and establishes regular performance reviews to track agenda deliverables.

Team Performance Management, Capabilities Development, Motivation

  • Manages SHE teams responsible to deliver Occupational Health, Safety and Environment results as per established work plans.
  • Develops and maintains SHE teams capabilities to ensure their competencies are in line with Unilever standard and curricular (License to Operate).
  • Performs Quarterly and Annual performance reviews with the team in line with HR guidelines. Creates opportunities for people development to fulfil their career aspirations. Ensures all team members have robust Future Fit Plans and reviews regularly to ensure team members live their purpose.
  • Confidently leads the team to ensure high performance, customer-oriented culture where professionalism, respect, diversity, equity and equality, and teamwork and collaboration, integrity and maturity is kept front and center and fostered and adhered to. Applies instruments of reward and recognition and consequence management wisely and fairly to keep team and individual morale high.

Incident Investigations, Improvement Plans, Audits and Compliance Excellence

  • Ensures timely and high-quality investigation of SHE incidents, including fatalities, serious incidents, potentially serious incidents, and other recordable incidents in line with corporate standards. Ensure system is in place to conduct post-incident reviews for all recordable cases and is personally led. Ensures Lessons Learnt are shared across organization. Ensures expansion of incident learnings is done in all sites to prevent recurrence.

  • Develop, deploy & implement plans to improve safety, health, and environment records of the sites to develop and implement SHE strategy and improvement action plans. Develop, implement, and monitor the investment plans (CAPEX / OPEX) to reduce or minimize SHE risks in sites.

  • Ensure constant improvement in PAR (Positive Assurance) scores across all sites and compliance with Unilever Framework Standards and Functional Standards.

  • Acts as a Compliance officer for SHE through establishing a system of internal and external audits of organizational processes against Unilever SHE standards on a set frequency. Prepares yearly audit plan. Conducts internal audits for factories, warehouses, and 3P manufacturers.

  • Provides SHE performance overview to Senior Management annually.

  • Works together with the Health Department to ensure Occupational Health risks are evaluated and relevant risk reduction programs are implemented to prevent work related occupational illnesses.

  • Works together with Workplace Services (WPS) Department to ensure delivery of risk reduction programs for office and R&D environments

  • Works with regulatory bodies on ensuring the Sites meets all local, national, legal and Unilever standards on SHE.

  • Tracks changes to National applicable legislation and norms and ensures requirements are acted upon in a timely manner to prevent Company exposure of non-compliance and fees. Plays an important advisory role in setting up new policies, norms, and regulations, sharing information with key internal customers

Skills

Essential:

  • 7 – 10 years in equivalent SHE role

  • University Science and Engineering degree qualification advantage

  • Solid experience in Supply Chain

  • Excellent knowledge of SHE ISO standards

  • Good knowledge of Process Safety

  • Strong knowledge of Behavior Based Safety methodology and a track record of implementation of the same

  • Strong negotiation skills

  • FMCG or O&G background in SHE and/ or Manufacturing or Logistics

Preferred:

  • Master’s in science / engineering

  • Special studies in Supply Chain related subjects

  • NEBOSH IGC certification
