JOB PURPOSE

This role exists to ensure the safe, compliant, and efficient treatment of industrial wastewater to meet Ghana EPA discharge standards and Unilever sustainability goals. You will operate, monitor, and maintain the Effluent Treatment Plant to protect the environment, people, and our brands while enabling responsible manufacturing in Tema.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate & Monitor: Run ETP machinery, pumps, blowers, clarifiers, and chemical dosing systems as per SOP to treat industrial wastewater.

  • Process Control: Maintain optimal pH, DO, MLSS, COD/BOD levels through regular testing and adjustment of chemicals.

  • Log Records: Keep daily logs for flow rate, chemical consumption, sludge level, lab results, and equipment readings.

  • Preventive Maintenance: Carry out routine checks, lubrication, and minor repairs on pumps, blowers, screens, and aerators.

  • Sludge Management: Control sludge wasting, dewatering, and disposal in line with EPA/Ghana EPA regulations.

  • Safety Compliance: Follow HSE protocols, use PPE, and report any leaks, spills, or abnormal operations immediately.

  • Chemical Handling: Safely handle alum, lime, polymers, chlorine, and other treatment chemicals with correct dilution.

  • Lab Support: Collect wastewater samples and assist lab team with jar tests and basic analysis.

  • Troubleshooting: Identify process upsets, equipment faults, and escalate to ETP Supervisor/Engineer when needed.

  • Housekeeping: Maintain clean, organized ETP area and ensure all tanks, walkways, and drains are free of debris.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s /Higher national diploma in mechanical/electrical/chemical engineering/Biochemistry

  • Recommend keeping within 3 -5 bullets as an ETP operator or related fields

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3-5 years experience operating an Effluent Treatment Plant or wastewater treatment system in a manufacturing/FMCG environment

  • Working knowledge of Ghana EPA effluent discharge standards, wastewater testing, and ETP chemical dosing

  • Basic mechanical and instrumentation troubleshooting skills on pumps, blowers, dosing systems, and PLC/HMI controls

  • Experience with ETP documentation, sampling, and lab analysis including BOD, COD, TSS, pH, and sludge management
